As the two joined the platform at an event in Chennai to inaugurate a host of infrastructure projects, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make Tamil an official language on par with Hindi.
After a bill was recently enacted in the state assembly, Mr Stalin also urged for exempting Tamil Nadu from the national medical entrance test NEET.
CM says,
“Make Tamil the official language like Hindi and the official language in Madras High Court”
The DMK, which came to power in Tamil Nadu last year, has long sought that Tamil be classified as a “official and administrative” language.
When the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was in power, Tamil was declared as a “classical language.”
PM Modi called Tamil language as “eternal” while speaking at the ceremony.
Mr. Stalin also urged the Centre to recognize a measure enacted by the Tamil Nadu legislature exempting the state from the National Eligibility Test (NEET).
Governor RN Ravi has not yet transmitted the bill to the Centre. Mr. Stalin has stated that the state does not require his approval of the Bill, but rather that it be conveyed to the President for assent “like a postman.”
Tamil Nadu resists NEET medical entrance exam, claiming that it favors those who can afford private tutoring while denying the opportunity to poor students and those who are living in rural.
