Viswanathan Anand defeats world champion Carlsen in a blitz match in Norway

On Tuesday, Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen in the seventh round of the Norway Chess blitz event, finishing fourth.

Anand finished fourth in the event with five points after losing to Anish Giri in the fifth round and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France in the ninth round.

Wesley So, an American grandmaster, is in first place with 6.5 points, one point ahead of Carlsen. Third place goes to Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri.
Viswanathan Anand began by defeating Norway’s Aryan Tari, then drew with Wesley So in the second round before defeating Bulgaria’s Veselin Topalov in the third. He shared points with Teimur Radjabov of Azerbaijan in the fourth round. A fifth-round loss to Giri was followed by a sixth-round tie with China’s Hao Wang and a seventh-round victory against Carlsen.

In the following two rounds, however, a tie with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and a loss to Vachier-Lagrave put an end to his aspirations of finishing first.

So gained the opportunity to choose his starting number for the classical event, which begins later today and will involve ten players, after winning the blitz event.
