Typhoon emergence causes Japan to issue evacuation order

According to public broadcaster NHK-World Japan, over two million residents in southwest Japan have been advised to vacate ahead of a severe typhoon expected to reach the region on Sunday.

According to NHK, the storm is expected to impact southern Kyushu, one of Japan’s southwest islands, notably inside Kagoshima Prefecture.

“Weather officials have issued an emergency alert for Kagoshima Prefecture due to heavy gusts, high waves, and a storm surge,” NHK said.

Homeowners in 965,000 houses in the seashore cities of Miyazaki, Kagoshima, and Amakusa have been instructed to leave.

According to NHK, a level five notice, the highest on Japan’s disaster warning scale, was issued to around 14,000 residents in the city of Nishinoomote on Kyushu island.”

“There is a possibility that it will be record heavy rain and an emergency heavy rain warning will be announced. The highest level of vigilance is required for rising water levels and flooding of rivers, landslide disasters, and flooding of lowlands.”

Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA).

JMA official Ryuta Kurora warned on Saturday that severe winds might cause houses to fall. Kurora advised locals to leave well before storm comes to avoid landslides and flooding.

According to NHK, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have already cancelled at least 335 flights planned to fly or arrive at Japanese airports on Sunday.

“The eye of Typhoon Nanmadol is clearly visible in satellite images. The typhoon has developed rapidly since Friday night,” NHK reported.
