Two Persons Related To Media Organisation Detained Under PSA In J&K This Year

According to Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, two people connected to media organisations were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir this year under the Public Safety Act.

In Rajya Sabha, Mr. Rai was replying to a question about, whether Jammu and Kashmir had seen an increase in the detention of journalists and members of local media outlets, as well as an increase in the number of internet shutdowns by authorities, since Articles 370 and 35-A were repealed in August 2019.

Internet access in J&K was briefly suspended for the maintenance of law and order once the special status was revoked, according to Rai, and then it was recovered.

According to the administration of Jammu and Kashmir, two people connected to media organisations have been detained this year under the Public Safety Act, stated by him in a written reply. 

In order to maintain law and order and to protect the public’s safety and security, the minister stated that internet services were temporarily banned in Jammu and Kashmir after the constitutional revisions on August 5, 2019. However in the end , he claimed that internet services have gradually resumed.

Jammu and Kashmir currently has no restrictions on internet services. The police are obligated by law to take action against anyone without regard to profession or other factors, who is discovered engaging in acts that endanger the integrity and security of the nation.

  Mr Nityanand Rai further added that, the official website of the government of Jammu and Kashmir posts the temporary suspension of internet services orders issued by the competent authority pursuant to the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017 during emergency situations.
