The Journey: 16 Years Of Twitter

Twitter, a major social media platform, was introduced on this day 16 years ago. The public debut of the microblogging website took place on July 15, 2006. With millions of active members since then, it has grown to become one of the greatest social networking sites.

The podcasting company Odeo, where Jack Dorsey was an engineer, served as Twitter’s primary source of inspiration. Following Apple’s announcement that it will be integrating podcasts into its iTunes service, Odeo’s management realised they needed a fresh strategy. Just then, Dorsey had the bright idea to create a short messaging service (SMS) that would allow users to send brief blog-like updates to their pals. In 2006, Twitter Inc. was formed by Evan Williams, Biz Stone, Noah Glass, and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. The first tweet was sent in March 2006 by Dorsey.

Hashtags were first included to the social media company’s platform in 2007, but the concept wasn’t immediately well-liked. Hashtags, however, became a vital component of its operation as a result of its connection with Twitter users.

The blue “verified” tick was introduced by Twitter in 2009 to stop people from pretending to be well-known people and organisations. Retweets were another function that was offered to the site the same year.

In order to generate revenue, Twitter implemented a sponsored tweets option after its user base surpassed 100 million in 2010. In order to combat cyberbullying and harassment, Twitter developed an anti-abuse feature that enables users to filter, block, and report offensive information. Additionally, the site now has DMs features thanks to the corporation.

Twitter added Stories and Spaces to its platform in 2020. However, Stories were eventually taken down because of the undesirable user response.

Twitter disabled former US President Donald Trump’s account on January 6, 2021, the day of the Capitol attack, and removed it permanently two days later. Also erased were tens of thousands of QAnon accounts. Jack Dorsey submitted his resignation that year and proposed Twitter CTO Parag Agrawal as the company’s new CEO. Dorsey was immediately replaced as CEO of Twitter by Agrawal.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, accepted Twitter’s offer to purchase the firm for around $44 billion on April 25, 2022. Musk then withdrew from the agreement, claiming that Twitter had refused to give him the information he had requested on the fake and bot accounts.

Overall, it is easy to state that Twitter has blended into our daily lives.
