NTPC has finally completed India’s largest floating solar power project. This project of Telangana located at Ramagundam will provide 100 MW power. Since the commissioning of the project, the commercial production of floating solar capacity in South India has increased to 217 MW. Earlier, NTPC had commissioned 92 MW power generation at Kayamkulam in Kerala and 25 MW at Simhadri in Andhra Pradesh from floating solar power.
The estimated cost of this project by NTPC is Rs 423 crore. The project covers a total area of 500 acres of a reservoir. The project is divided into 40 separate sections, each section producing 2.5 MW of electricity. The evaporation of about 32.5 lakh cubic meters of water per year will be prevented by the floating solar panels.
This system will also help in maintaining the temperature balance of the water body solar module. The electricity produced could indirectly cut coal consumption by 1,65,000 tonnes per year, which could reduce greenhouse emissions by 210,000 tonnes per year.
