Supreme Court puts stay on proceedings between MS Dhoni and Amrapali group

On July 25 (Monday), a Supreme Court panel made up of justices U U Lalit and Bela M Trivedi halted the arbitration case that former Indian captain MS Dhoni had brought against the Amrapali group of enterprises, for whom he served as the brand ambassador.

What is the matter ?

The Supreme Court gave notice to the former World Cup champion and urged Justice Birbal to halt the arbitration. Earlier this year, MS Dhoni filed a petition with the Supreme Court to defend his ownership rights in a penthouse that the right-handed batter had reserved in an Amrapali Group property ten years prior.

The Amrapali group’s numerous housing projects are currently being finished by another real estate company, but the Supreme Court is still keeping an eye on them. On the direction of the supreme court, the former group directors of Amrapali, Anil Kumar Sharma, Shiv Priya, and Ajay Kumar, are currently detained.

Dhoni had filed a case with the Delhi High Court earlier in 2016 due to a financial disagreement with the Amrapali business (now a defunct real estate firm). The High Court then designated Veena Birbal, a retired judge on the bench, to arbitrate the business dispute involving Dhoni and the real estate company.

Supreme Court’s Say:

The bench was made aware of the obstacles involved in continuing the ongoing arbitration case between Dhoni and the Amrapali group of firms. The Apex court further indicated that it had taken notice of the problem and had appointed a court receiver to oversee the timely completion of the housing developments and the distribution of allotments.

“Given these, it would be very challenging for the receiver to handle and defend such litigations…

The Amrapali group of enterprises cannot be expected to be represented by the former management or anybody else before the learned sole arbitrator, the bench said.
