The Sri Lankan Cricket on Sunday confirmed that Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested in Sydney for alleged sexual assault. The player was arrested from team hotel and due to appear in court on Monday.
The New South Wales Police in a statement said that Gunathilaka has been charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. A 29-year-old woman with whom Gunathilaka was communicating for a number of days via an online dating application, complained that the player sexually assaulted her on the evening of Wednesday at a residence in Rose Bay, earlier this week.
Gunathilaka was ruled out of the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia with hamstring injury but remained with the squad in Australia. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board said that they have been monitoring the matter closely and will take stern action against the player ‘if found guilty’.
Sri Lanka, a team which had to go through lots of injury is thrown out of the World Cup following a close 5-wickets defeat against England in their last league match of Group-1. The performance of the team was 50-50 and they couldn’t continue their Asia Cup 2022 title confidence at bigger stage.
