Sonia urges Gehlot to lead congress amid Rahul’s reluctance

In the midst of the Congress party’s presidential election campaign, the name of the chief candidate remains a source of controversy. According to sources, senior party leaders told Sonia Gandhi, the party’s supremo, that she should continue until 2024 if Rahul Gandhi denies running for the office.

As congress gets ready to announce its final schedule for elections, Sonia Gandhi meets Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and asks him to take over the party’s post.

Mr. Gehlot, however, is said to be uncomfortable with the idea and stated his earlier stance that former party chief Rahul Gandhi is the unanimous choice.

“I have been saying this repeatedly that Congress will revive only if Rahul Gandhi ji takes over. Without him, people will be disappointed and if people sit at home, then the party will be weak. Ultimately, Rahul Gandhi ji has to take over by respecting the sentiments expressed by everyone that he should lead,” Mr. Gehlot told reporters at the Delhi airport while heading to Ahmedabad after meeting Ms. Gandhi.

“We will continue to put pressure and convince him to take over as the party chief,” he added.

But Mr.Gandhi has been reluctant to take over the post keeping in mind Ms.Gandhi health and age, the party is looking for a non-gandhi to take over the reins of the party.
