Single use plastics to be banned in India

From July 1, 2022, India will outlaw the production, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of certain single-use plastic (SUP) items nationwide due to their poor utility and high potential for littering.

The Indian government has acted resolutely to reduce pollution brought on by single-use plastic waste, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pledge for the phase-out of single-use plastic products by 2022. From July 1, 2022, some articles will be prohibited nationwide because they are single-use plastic items with a high potential for littering.

Here’s the list of items to be banned from July 1 2022

  • Earbuds with plastic sticks
  • Plastic sticks for balloons
  • Plastic flags
  • Candy sticks
  • Ice-cream sticks
  • Polystyrene (Thermocol) for decoration
  • Plastic plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straws and trays
  • Wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes
  • Invitation cards
  • Cigarette packets
  • Plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron
  • Stirrers

National and state level control rooms will also be established, and special enforcement teams will be formed, to check the illegal manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of prohibited single-use plastic items. This will help to ensure that the ban on the identified SUP items is effectively enforced starting on July 1, 2022.
It has been requested that all states and union territories establish border checkpoints to halt the interstate movement of any prohibited single-use plastic items.
Launching the CPCB Grievance Redressal App would enable citizens to take action against the plastics crisis.
