The Global Peace Index (GPI) 2022 assigns a “peacefulness” score to 163 countries around the world by examining information on their political stability, relations with their neighbouring countries, the number of refugees, the presence of nuclear weapons, internal and external conflicts, military spending, incarceration rates, and “perceptions of criminality,” among other things.

The Sydney-based Institute for Economics & Peace, which put together the report, notes that “generally, peacefulness has declined over the previous 14 years, with the average country score declining by 3.2%.”

Iceland was deemed the safest and most tranquil location due to its almost nonexistent defence budget, low crime rates, and avoidance of global strife. Since the GPI started in 2008, the nation has been at the top of the list every year.

New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark, and Austria came in second through fifth, respectively.

Ireland received high marks for its thriving economy, while New Zealand was praised for its low threat of international conflict and calm response to the pandemic.

Following Spain (29), Canada (12), and Germany (16), the United Kingdom came in at number 34. Afghanistan was classified as the least peaceful nation at number 163.

The United States ranked 129, placing it in the “low” category for peace, after nations like Haiti (115) and Cuba (98), which were placed in the “middle” category.

Following Russia’s invasion in February, Ukraine fell 17 spots this year, to number 153.

EUROPE Continues to be the World’s Most Peaceful Zone:

However, the IEP claims that “Europe continues to be the world’s most tranquil zone. Four of the top five most peaceful nations are located in this area, and only one European nation falls outside the top half of the ranking.

The safest nations from a European perspective were Iceland, Ireland, Denmark, Austria, and Portugal.
The Middle East was discovered to be the region with the least peace and safety.
