Russia to blame for Sri Lanka Crisis: Zelensky

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the catalyst for Sri Lanka’s, as well as the rest of the world’s, food and energy crisis at the Asian Leadership Conference in South Korea. He called the invasion an “economic shock” as it disrupted food and energy supplies in many countries. Zelensky claimed that this was a calculated move to fit the Russian agenda.

While addressing the conference, Zelensky noted the gravity of the situation and how it will affect the global supply chain:

“The shocking food and fuel price hikes led to a social explosion. No one knows now how it will end.”

Sri Lanka, going through one of its most turbulent times in recent history, is facing an economic crisis. People blame the government and protests have led to President Rajapaksa fleeing the country for safety. Schools are to be shut until further notice and soaring prices for common goods is making life exceedingly difficult for Sri Lankans.

A recent G7 summit held discussions about the ripple effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on the food and energy supply chain. The G7 leaders pledged their support for Ukraine’s agricultural sector and demanded Russia provide a safe passage for agricultural shipping.
