Researchers at IIT Guwahati create a “Radiative Cooler,” an “electricity-free” alternative to ACs

An energy-free “Radiative Cooler” has been created by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati. This is a low-cost, effective “passive” radiative cooling system that can replace air conditioners.

The radiative cooler’s coating material is an electricity-free cooling device that can be installed on roofs and works both during the day and at night. The cooler can be used in place of traditional air conditioners.

Work of Passive Radiative Coolers

In order to function, passive radiative coolers emit heat in the form of infrared radiation, which can pass through the atmosphere and then be released into the frigid outer space. The majority of passive radiative coolers could only currently be used at night. The coolers must reflect all of the sun light if they are to function during the day. Passive radiative coolers have not been able to offer enough cooling during the daytime till now. As a result, scientists at IIT Guwahati set out to find a solution to these problems and develop a radiative cooling system that is less expensive, more effective, and operable both day and night.

What Are The System’s Main Benefits Over Current Technologies?

  1. Compared to current cooking methods, the radiative cooling technology is better. These benefits include the design’s compatibility with huge areas and lack of lithography. A stone or metal block that has had an image drawn on it with a thick material that draws ink is used in the lithography printing process.

2. To create large-scale radiative coolers that are both economical and effective, large-area compatibility is crucial.

3. Without having to change the cooler’s position or angle in relation to the Sun during the day, the radiative cooler’s design will assure efficient cooling.

4. The radiative cooler offers roughly 1.6 times more cooling power than a more contemporary cooler design that produces a comparable reduction in ambient temperatures.
