“Report Symptoms Of Monkeypox” Tamil Nadu Govt Pleads

Tiruchirappalli (Tamil Nadu): The Tamil Nadu government encourages citizens travelling from various countries, especially African nations, to report any complaints of monkeypox to the local health officer.

The excellent monitoring systems placed by the government allowed it to react to the sudden strike of COVID-19 and take appropriate counter measures as required, says Health Department principal secretary J Radhakrishnan

“We have received the interim guidelines from the Centre on the monkeypox disease. That is people arriving from African countries or Europe, Australia, Canada, and the USA, though did not show any symptom at the airport, but developed some symptoms within 21 days of their arrival, they have to report it to the local health official,” he told reporters after inspecting the district government hospital in Tiruchirappalli.

“We have been told that the disease will not be severe, but we have to be careful to prevent it. So far, no cases related to monkeypox have been reported in the country,”

He said the government was able to identify groups of viral cases reported in Tamil Nadu due to a robust surveillance mechanism, noting that the Health Department has bolstered the medical infrastructure in the state.

“Earlier, we detected cluster of virus cases on the IIT-Madras campus and later in another private medical college. Now, we have detected another cluster at an private engineering college at Kelambakkam in the city. All the 31 cases reported identified are doing well,” he said.

All students tested for COVID-19 in the IIT campus in Madras and the private colleges have recovered. He further went on to elaborate that we the reason such cases are arising when the virus’s effects are waning is because proper COVID-19 protocols are not being followed which allows the virus to propagate further.

He stressed on the point of people vaccinating themselves as that was the only possible solution against this virus. He also told that “Another 13 lakh people are eligible to receive booster dose and are yet to receive it,” which can lead to further harm.

The overall trend in Tamil Nadu shows a decline in COVID-19 cases and all the credit, he believes, goes to the vaccination and the people adhering to the protocols laid down for this purpose.
