Ranil Wickremesinghe, former 6-time Prime Minister, has been elected to become the next President of Sri Lanka. He is the successor of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the country earlier this month following months of protests and economic crisis.
Wickremesinghe won the election with 134 votes out of 223 votes in the parliament. The parliament houses 225 seats, out of which 2 members: GG Ponnambalam and Selvaraj Kajendram were absent.
Protesters in the capital Colombo shouted slogans against Wickremesinghe as well, a noted ally of Rajapaksa. His private residence was destroyed and his Prime Minister’s Office was raided by those who disapproved of his leadership.
More unrest is anticipated with many protestors claiming that Wickremesinghe is part of the reason why Sri Lanka is bankrupt.
