Rajapaksa To Step Down As Sri Lanka President

Embattled Days after angry demonstrators broke into the leaders’ homes in protest over their handling of the nation’s worst economic crisis, the Prime Minister’s office announced on Monday that Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has officially informed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he will step down on July 13 as previously announced

Rajapaksa, the president of Sri Lanka, announced on Saturday that demonstrators had broke into his official residence and demanded that he quit over how he had handled the country’s terrible economic crisis. Rajapaksa stated he will stand down on Wednesday.

According to a statement from the PM’s office, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa officially told Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that he will be stepping down as originally planned.

The gathering will cover the election of a successor to Mr. Rajapaksa as president as well as the establishment of a new government.

On Saturday, demonstrators burst into Mr. Rajapaksa’s official mansion in Colombo, giving the cash-strapped island nation a turbulent day. The demonstrators were observed in the President’s House bedrooms and swimming in the pool.

The 22 million-strong nation of Sri Lanka is experiencing the worst economic crisis in 70 years, with millions of people unable to afford basic necessities like food, medicine, and fuel.
