President Election: Gopalkrishna Gandhi refused to contest the presidential election on behalf of the opposition

Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Monday rejected the request of leaders of opposition parties to contest the upcoming presidential election ad said that the election should have a candidate who has national consensus and ensured opposition unity. In a statement, Gopalkrishna Gandhi said that it’s an honour for him that many leaders of opposition parties considered his name to be the opposition candidate in the upcoming presidential elections.

Gandhi said, ‘I am extremely grateful to him, but after considering this matter deeply, I see that the candidate of the opposition should be such that apart from opposition unity, there should be a consensus at the national level.’

He added, ‘I think there will be more people who will do a better job than me. That’s why I have requested the leaders that such a person should be given an opportunity. India should get a President like Rajaji (C Rajagopalachari) as the last Governor General and the post which was first graced by Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

The opposition is still confused to find the right candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi is the third person to have rejected the presidential election offer. Earlier, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and 84-year-old Farooq Abdullah withdrew their names as possible opposition candidates for the presidential election.

Voting for the President is to be held on July 18. The enrolment process started from June 15 and June 29 is the last date for submission of nomination papers. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on June 30.
