Pink Diamond sells for record 49.9 million US dollar at Hong Kong Auction

A Pink diamond was sold for 49.9 US dollar in Hong Kong on friday, setting a world record for the highest price per carat for a diamond sold at auction.

The 11.5-carat Williamson Pink Star diamond, auctioned by Sotheby’s for 392 million Hong Kong dollar, the second-highest price paid at auction for any jewel.

Pink diamonds are among the rarest and most valuable of the coloured diamonds.

The Williamson Pink Star diamond draws its name from two legendary Pink diamonds. The first is the 23.60-carat Williamson diamond which was gifted to late Queen Elizabeth- ll as a wedding gift in 1947, while the second is the 59.60-carat Pink Star diamond that sold for a record 71.2 million US dollar at auction in 2017.

The winning bid, by an undiscovered buyer from Boca Raton, Florida, was more than twice the estimated sale price.

Tobias Kormind, managing director of UK jewel retailer 77 Diamonds, said the “astounding” sale proved high quality diamonds could still get big prices even in a shaky economy. “Hard assets such as world-class diamonds have history of performing well”, he added.
