New found ally for Putin

Vladimir Putin said this on Syria following discussions with the presidents of Iran and Turkey. Keep in mind his words in Tehran.

“The Syrian crisis can only be resolved by political and diplomatic means… by strictly adhering to the basic principles of the respect of sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity.”

This Vladimir Putin attacked Ukraine five months prior; at the time, there was no mention of the necessity to respect a nation’s sovereignty, independence, unity, or territorial integrity. The distinction? President Bashar al-Assad of Syria is a pro-Russian figure who the Kremlin was determined to maintain in office. Instead of using “political and diplomatic measures,” Russia sent troops to aid in regaining lost territory.

However, Ukraine has a pro-Western government that aspires to join the EU and wants to prevent the country from ever returning to Russia’s sphere of influence.

The Russian army entered eastern Ukraine on the fictitious pretences of battling “Nazis,” opposing Nato enlargement, and “liberating” Russians and speakers of Russian. Scores of people have died in Ukraine since the invasion.

International outrage at the Russian invasion led to a wave of sanctions against Moscow. Russia is quickly moving toward pariah status in the West.

For the Kremlin, the Tehran summit was an opportunity to try to show that, despite attempts to isolate Russia, it retains powerful allies and geo-political influence. There aren’t many places in the world President Putin can go to get public statements of support for his “special military operation” in Ukraine. Tehran is one of them.

“In the case of Ukraine, had you not taken the initiative, the other side would have taken the initiative and caused the war. Nato would know no bounds if the way was open to it. And if it was not stopped in Ukraine, it would start the same war some time later using Crimea as a pretext.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei reportedly told President Putin
