In a significant step towards promoting clean energy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will declare Modhera, a village in the Mehsana district of Gujarat as India’s first solar-powered village on Sunday, said the state government. PM Modi will also lay a foundation for projects worth more than ₹ 3,900 crores in the village. Modhera, which is famous for Sun temple, will mark a significant step toward spreading renewable energy.
The Modhera village is located on the banks of the Pushpavati river. It is 25 km away from the Mehsana district of Gujarat, and about 100 km from the state capital Gandhinagar. The village has a total geographical area of around 2,436 hectares.
The village has a ground-mounted solar power plant, and over 1,300 rooftop solar system with 1kW capacity have been installed on houses to generate electricity. All solar systems are linked to a battery energy storage system (BESS). During the day, solar panels will provide power to the village, while in the evening, BESS, India’s first grid-connected megawatt hour scale battery energy storage system, will provide energy to the houses.
This initiative of both the central and state government will mark Modhera, India’s first village to become a net renewable energy generator, demonstrating how renewable energy can empower people.
