Former Union Minister Mallikarjun Kharge is now the new party president of Indian National Congress. On Wednesday, after counting of votes at Delhi headquarters, Congress Election Authority Chairman Madhusudhan Mistry announced Mr. Kharge as winner of the Congress presidential election held on October 17. More than 9500 delegates participated in this election all over India.
Congress Central Election Authority Chairman Mistry while addressing the media informed that the ‘total counted votes were 9385 – of which Mallikarjun Kharge received 7899 votes and Shashi Tharoor received 1092 votes’. He also said that invalid votes were 416.
It will be for the first time in 24-years that the Congress party will get a party chief who doesn’t belong to the Nehru-Gandhi family. Kharge will take place of Sonia Gandhi who had been serving as interim president since 2019 general election when her son Rahul Gandhi stepped down due to very poor performance of Congress.

Earlier in the day, election agent to Congress presidential candidate Shashi Tharoor writes letter to Congress Central Election Authority Chairman Madhusudhan Mistry, alleging “extremely serious irregularities in conduct of election in UP” and demands “that all votes from UP to be deemed invalid”. Congress CEAC Mistry expressed satisfaction with the party’s presidential polls process, saying it was ” free, fair and transparent“.
According to sources, Kharge will be sworn as the new president of the India’s grand-old party after Diwali in a programme under the presence of senior leaders. After two decades, a Congress leader out of Gandhi family will be head of the party.
