Maharashtra Political crisis: BJP ready to stake claim to form government after Thackeray’s resignation

With the announcement of Uddhav Thackeray’s resignation from the post of Chief Minister on Wednesday evening amid the ongoing political turmoil in Maharashtra, the atmosphere of celebration started in the Bharatiya Janata Party. BJP leaders were seen celebrating and distributing sweets at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai. At its centre was Devendra Fadnavis, who met the governor on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday evening, the Supreme Court refused to stop the floor test in Maharashtra and after the verdict, Thackeray announced his resignation from the post. Earlier, the Governor had ordered a floor test in Maharashtra at 11 am on Thursday, against which Shiv Sena had filed a petition in the Supreme Court. Uddhav Thackeray’s team, which was reduced to only 15 MLAs, had demanded in the petition from the Supreme Court that the floor test called on Thursday should be stopped.

There was already discussion that if the Supreme Court’s decision does not go in favor of Shiv Sena, then Uddhav Thackeray can resign from the post of Chief Minister. Speculation intensified at the Maharashtra cabinet meeting held on Wednesday evening, where the government renamed the three cities and Thackeray formally thanked the ministers for their cooperation.

Announcing his resignation, Thackeray came live on Facebook and said, ‘The people whom we have raised and created, they have cheated us. I came to power unexpectedly and that’s how I am exiting. Shiv Sena is a family, will not let it break. I’m not going anywhere.’
