LGBTQ rejoice! US house passes bill for same sex marriage protection

Washington: Amidst worries that the Supreme Court would countermand recognition of same-sex marriage, the US House of Representatives on Tuesday (local time) approved a bill to guarantee marriage equality, according to The Hill.

The Respect for Marriage Act was approved by a vote of 267 to 157, with 47 Republicans voting with all Democrats in favour. The Hill reports that only seven Republicans cast a ballot.

The bill will now be considered by the equally split Senate for a vote, where its chances are uncertain. In the 100-member Senate, Democrats hold 50 members, and 10 Republican votes would be required to move the legislation to the floor.

As a preventative measure to safeguard LGBTQ rights in the event that the court decides to further undermine the two cases in the future, House Democrats presented the Respect for Marriage Act and took that up for a vote.

Two legislation to safeguard access to abortion in the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision were approved by the House last week.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), stated during discussion on the House floor on Tuesday that it would “reaffirm that marriage equality is and must be the rule of the nation” and that it “is and should forever be considered settled law.”

“All married people who are building their lives together must know that
