Bengaluru: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai denounced the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti’s (MES) purported attack on couples carrying out a wedding procession playing Kannada music in the border region of Belagavi on Saturday, and warned of severe action against everyone abusing Kannadigas in Karnataka.
He claimed that police already had taken action and also that the government has conveyed a serious signal to all who try to sabotage the peace , taking the law into their own hands.
“We strongly condemn MES vandalism, our police have taken action, we have sent out a clear message on this issue. We cannot tolerate law being taken into hands,”
Mr Bommai said.
On Thursday night, police arrested nine MES personnel for allegedly assaulting civilians partaking in a wedding procession performing Kannada music in Dhamnae village in Belagavi. According to authorities, those that were wounded were taken to the hospital for treatment.
For numerous years, the MES has been lobbying in Belagavi’s border regions for the unification of 800-odd villages with Maharashtra. On linguistic grounds, Maharashtra asserts that the border district of Belagavi used to be part of the Bombay Presidency, and then became a district of Karnataka.
