After violent protests demanding justice for the alleged suicide of a 16-year-old student turned out on campus, prohibitive orders were imposed in some areas of the Kallakurichi district in northern Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Agitators went on the rampage, torching police vehicles and classrooms, among several other campus vehicles.
The 16-year-old student, who came from the nearby Cuddalore region, was residing in the dormitory when, on July 12, she reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the building. However, the girl’s suicide letter, in which she accused two instructors of “torturing her,” and the postmortem report, which mentioned damage marks on her body, were cited by the family as evidence of foul play in the death and as justification for action against the school administration.
The suspected suicide of the student has been moved to CB-CID wing, according to DGP C Sylendra Badu, who was sent to Kallakurichi by Chief Minister M K Stalin along with Home Secretary K Phanindra Reddy. He said that three administrators from the institution had been detained in connection with the student’s passing.
Stalin, who is presently receiving treatment for Covid-19 in a private facility, made an appeal for peace and made a commitment to bringing those responsible to justice. Along with the 13 school buses, the enraged crowd also set fire to three police cars and a handful of two-wheelers.
The Kallakurichi district administration imposed prohibitory orders in Kallakurichi taluk and in Chinna Salem, where the private school is located, after the situation blew out of hand with the protestors smashing open the school gates and engaging in arson.
The girl’s family has been demanding an impartial investigation into the event for the past few days due to the police’s “inaction” against the management despite filing a complaint under 174 (1) of the CrPC.
In apologising for the event, the school administration placed the blame on the girl’s parents, adding, “We are transparent, and we never hide anything.” An powerful group that advocates for private schools also supported the school by ordering a break on Monday for all of its matriculation and CBSE schools in retaliation for the violence.
