Iran and Argentina Apply for Membership in BRICS

The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Argentine Republic have applied for membership in the ’emerging economies’ group of countries called BRICS comprising of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Tehran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that Iran’s membership will add value for “both sides”. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova announced on her Telegram channel that Argentina has also applied to be a part of BRICS.

“While the White House was thinking about what else to turn off in the world, ban or spoil, Argentina and Iran applied to join the BRICS.”

While speaking to TASS, a Russian news service, Russian Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the preliminary process to incorporate both the countries has begun.

“Of course, both Argentina and Iran are worthy and respected candidates, as well as a number of other countries that are also mentioned in the discussions,”

While attending the 14th BRICS summit as a guest, Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, expressed his desire for Argentina to join BRICS.

BRICS, which was created in 2009 as an alternate to the Western-dominated market, accounts for more than 40% of the world’s population. About 26% of the global economy is contributed by the BRICS countries.

14th BRICS Summit, which was held virtually from June 23rd to 24th, saw the leaders adopt the ‘Beijing Declaration’ which emphasizes inclusivity, responsible economic policies, fair representation and multilateralism and maintaining international law.
