India’s request for a permanent membership in the UNSC is backed by 4 of the 5 UNSC members: Government

According to the government’s statement to the Lok Sabha on Friday, India’s application for a permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has received support from four of the UNSC’s five permanent members.

China opposed India

V Muraleedharan, the minister of state for external affairs, responded to a query by stating that India has continuously raised China’s objections to UNSC reform. China is the only nation that has not yet backed India’s application to join the UNSC.

The minister stated that “four of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council have bilaterally indicated official affirmations of support for India’s nomination to a permanent seat in an expanded UN Security Council.”

India’s main concern- ‘Permanent membership of UN

India’s permanent membership in a larger UNSC has been given the “highest priority” by the government, according to Muraleedharan.
To achieve this, the government has launched a number of projects intended to increase international support for India. The issue is routinely discussed at all levels, including the highest levels, during bilateral and multilateral meetings”, he added.

He also made reference to remarks made by a representative for the Chinese foreign ministry during discussions between China and India about the UNSC last year.
Currently, the UNSC is made up of 10 non-permanent member nations that the UN General Assembly elects for a two-year term as well as five permanent member nations.

In response to a question, the spokesperson stated that China supports UNSC reforms that increase the body’s authority and effectiveness as well as the representation and voice of developing nations so that small and medium-sized nations have a greater opportunity to participate in the body’s decisions making process.

The UN General Assembly is now debating the UNSC reform process, and India and other like-minded nations have been pressing for the start of text-based negotiations immediately, according to Muraleedharan.

According to him, India collaborates with other nations pursuing reform through membership in the G-4 (India, Japan, Brazil, and Germany) and the L.69 Group (a cross regional group of countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America).
