Shaunak Sen’s documentary ‘All That Breathes’, which earlier won the main jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival, has now received the Cannes Film Festival’s highest documentary award, the Golden Eye.
The documentary was acquired by HBO Documentary Films earlier this week, while it was still playing at the festival.
“The Golden Eye belongs to a film that, in a world of destruction, reminds us that every life matters, and every small deed matters,” said the Golden Eye jury, which included Agnieszka Holland, Iryna Tsilyk, Pierre Deladonchamps, Alex Vicente, and Hicham Falah. It doesn’t matter if you grab your camera, save a bird, or look for some moments of stolen beauty. It’s an inspiring trip following three Don Quixotes who, while not saving the entire world, do save their own.
All That Breathes recounts the lives of Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad, two brothers who labour out of a run-down basement in Wazirabad, Delhi, rescuing and treating injured birds, particularly black kites. The L’Oeil d’Or documentary award, commonly known as The Golden Eye award, was established in 2015 in partnership with the Cannes Film Festival by the French-speaking authors’ association LaScam. The award includes a cash prize of 5,000 euros ( ₹4.16 lakh approximately).
