India’s Covid-19 tally has surpassed 8K for the second day, with 8,582 new infections and 44,513 ongoing cases

According to data issued by the Union Health Ministry at 8 a.m. on Sunday, India had 8,582 new Covid-19 cases and four deaths. In the previous 24 hours, 4,435 people have recovered from Covid-19, leaving 44,513 active infections across the country.

On Saturday, 1,745 additional Covid-19 cases were reported, bringing the total number of active patients in Mumbai to almost 10,000. Meanwhile, the state reported 2,922 cases and one death. On Saturday, the daily caseload in Mumbai fell somewhat after recording nearly 2,000 new cases the day before. This is due to a decrease in testing from 15,346 on Friday to 14,227 on Saturday, according to officials. Within the last 24 hours, the test positivity rate (TPR) – the number of positive cases out of all the tests performed — increased to 12.26%.

In a separate development, a government spokesman warned on Saturday that China’s capital Beijing is dealing with a “explosive” Covid-19 epidemic linked to a bar, as Shanghai’s commercial hub launched mass testing to contain an increase in cases linked to a popular beauty salon.
