“We continue to pay close attention to recent events in Sri Lanka. India supports the people of Sri Lanka in their efforts to achieve prosperity and growth via democratic institutions, established principles, and a legally binding constitution “said Arindam Bagchi.
As the economic crisis worsened, thousands of protesters barged into Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s official residence in Sri Lanka and demanded his resignation. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa left the area just before demonstrators surrounded his official house. Additionally, the protesters set fire to Ranil Wickremesinghe’s home. He is the prime minister of Sri Lanka.
The country, which is suffering from a severe cash shortage, is already in default on its debt while also battling to pay its bills and import such goods. The island nation is requesting financial assistance from its neighbours China, India, and the International Monetary Fund.
