On Tuesday, the US ambassador to the United Nations said the Biden administration supported the transfer of Russian grain and fertiliser to meet rising global food hunger caused by the Ukraine conflict.
Although there are no US penalties on Russian food and fertiliser supplies, Linda Thomas-Greenfield told reporters at the United Nations that corporations are “a little worried” and have been holding back.
In an effort to move vitally needed agricultural items out of Russia, Thomas-Greenfield said the US is prepared to send “comfort letters” to grain and fertiliser exporters and insurance companies.
She stated that the Biden administration is “extremely supportive” of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ efforts to allow grain shipments from Ukraine via train and the Black Sea, as well as his efforts to ensure that Russian food and fertiliser have free access to global markets.
Rebeca Grynspan, the secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, visited Moscow on Monday and had “productive conversations” with First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov about easing Russian grain and fertiliser exports, according to a UN spokeswoman.
According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, Grynspan was in Washington on Tuesday speaking with US officials.
According to Guterres, global hunger has reached a new high. He claims that Ukraine and Russia produce nearly a third of the world’s wheat and barley, as well as half of the world’s sunflower oil, and that Russia and its partner Belarus are the world’s second and third largest producers of potash, a critical fertiliser element.
