Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party was given a show cause notice by Pakistan’s election commission on Tuesday for accepting illegal donations from 351 foreign-based firms and 34 foreign nationals, which was a setback for the former prime leader.
Akbar S. Babar, a founding member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, brought the case, which had been pending since November 2014, before a three-member panel of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), consisting of Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja, Nisar Ahmed Durrani, and Shah Muhammad Jatoi. According to a source, the ECP also claimed that the party got funds from Romita Shetty, an Indian-origin businesswoman located in the US, in violation of the law.
According to the judgement, fees were made to Wootton Cricket Limited, a Cayman Islands-incorporated business owned by Naqvi, the guy behind Dubai’s Abraaj Group. According to a source, the ECP stated in the written verdict that PTI received USD 2,121,500 in funding from Wootton Cricket Limited “knowingly and deliberately.”
