In an effort to combat food poverty in South Asia and the Middle East, the four-nation grouping I2U2 (India-Israel-UAE-USA) on Thursday announced an investment of USD 2 billion to create a number of integrated food parks across India.
The leaders of the grouping, including Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi , US President Joe Biden, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid, and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, convened a virtual summit at which the decision was made.
In a joint statement, the I2U2 leaders promised that New Delhi would offer suitable land and make it easier for farmers to participate in the food parks.
The gathering concentrated on food security problem and clean energy during their conference and explored new approaches to provide longer-term, more diversified food production and food transportation networks that can better manage global food shocks.
The I2U2 leaders highlighted the initiatives relating to food security and stated that the UAE – home to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and host of COP28 in 2023 – will invest $2 billion USD to develop a number of integrated food parks throughout India that will incorporate cutting-edge climate-smart technologies to reduce food waste and spoilage, conserve fresh water, and use renewable energy sources.
“The private sectors in the United States and Israel will be invited to share their knowledge and provide creative solutions that enhance the project’s overall sustainability. In order to combat food insecurity in South Asia and the Middle East, these initiatives will assist enhance agricultural yields, the organisation stated in a statement.”
According to a joint release, the I2U2 company will also pursue a hybrid renewable energy project in Gujarat that will include 300 MW of wind and solar power in addition to a battery energy storage system.
