Heavy rain causes 15 Dead and 3 Missing in Southern China

BEIJING (Xinhua) — At least 15 people have deceased as a result of extreme rains in southern China, as per state media. Two buildings were destroyed due to landslides in Fujian province, on China’s east coast, burying eight people, as per the official Xinhua News Agency, citing the Wuping county information office.

In an online report, national broadcaster CCTV reported five others perished and three were missing in Yunnan province, about 1,200 km (750 miles) distant in southern China. Authorities found three youngsters were swept away by flooding in Xincheng village in the Guangxi area on Friday. One person lived while the other two died.

On Thursday evening, heavy rain commenced in Wuping county, which is situated near 210 kilometres (130 miles) inland from the coastal city of Xiamen. Streets became flooded with murky water, and some roads were partially washed away, according to video posted online. According to official media, the storm damaged crops, power outages, and destroyed 39 houses in the county. About 1,600 persons had to be evacuated.

In Yunnan’s Qiubei county, which is about 130 km (80 miles) north of the Vietnamese border, the storm wrecked roads, bridges, telecommunications, and power facilities. “On Friday, five victims were uncovered in a collapsed industrial building in Fujian, while three more were found in a fallen residential building,” Xinhua said.
