Haitian Migrants’ Boat Sinks Off Bahamas

Bahamian security authorities have retrieved the corpses of 17 people in a boat carrying Haitian migrants that sunk off the coast of the Bahamas and rescued 25 others. It was unclear if anyone was still missing after the boat capsized on Sunday.

The fatalities comprised 15 women, one man, and a baby, according to a statement from the prime minister, Philip Brave Davis. According to him, health professionals took the victims who were saved for observation. He also said that investigators had found evidence that a twin-engine speed boat with up to 60 persons on board departed the Bahamas around 1 am, allegedly headed for Miami.

A criminal inquiry into the alleged human traffickers’ enterprise, according to Davis, has started.

I would like to convey the condolences of my government and the people of the Bahamas to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragedy.

My government, from the time it came to office, has warned against these treacherous voyages.

Philip Brave Davis, Prime Minister, Bahamas

Ariel Henry, the prime minister of Haiti, expressed his sympathy to the parents of the victims.

The number of Haitians detained while attempting to enter other nations has increased, according to governments in the area, including those in the United States.

This year, the Caribbean has seen a number of sinkings involving migrants, including one in May off the coast of Puerto Rico in which 11 people were confirmed dead and 38 others were saved.
