At least 21 people have died as a result of flash floods in Iran’s drought-stricken southern region of Fars, a source said on Saturday. According to Yousef Karegar, the mayor of Estahban, torrential rains flooded the Roudbal river near the city.

In the province, flooding affected more than 10 villages, he continued. Ahmad Vahidi, Iran’s interior minister, is said to have sent his sympathies to the flood victims’ families, according to a later source.
The country of Iran, which is experiencing a protracted drought that is being attributed to climate change, had received a warning about potentially severe seasonal rainfall. The increasing building of homes and roadways close to riverbeds has also increased the risks of flash floods. 44 persons died as a result of a flash flood in the province of Fars in March 2018.
