The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced poll dates of 15th Gujarat Assembly elections will be held on December 1 and 5. The counting of votes to be on December 8.
Earlier, when ECI announced Himachal Pradesh poll dates, oppositions questioned its move in the favour of BJP and hence providing extra time to the ruling party for inaugurations and commitments.
The BJP has been in power for three-decades now. They always talk ‘Gujarat Model‘ as the best in the country. But the last assembly elections was an alarm as it could only win 99 out 182 seats in 2017. The best performance of the saffron party came in 2002 bagging 127 seats when Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister.
The main rival for BJP in Gujarat is the Congress party. The grand-old party won 77 seats in 2017 assembly elections. The party under new leadership of Mallikarjun Kharge is targeting to win on issues such as unemploment, reservation for the Partidar community farmers with leaders like Hardik Patel and Jignesh Mevani.
The Gujarat Assembly elections is going to be a tri-series with a new party AAP contesting in the state for the first time. The Arvind Kejriwal party may give severe damage to BJP, the way it uprooted Congress in Punjab.
The Aam Aadmi Party has focused on issues like education, health, corruption and unemploment. The party has also announced ‘guarantees’ like free education, free electricity and a monthly stipend to unemployed youths and women above 18 if voted to power.
The Morbi bridge collapse which took more than 135 lives will play an important role in this election as reports say the tragedy happened due to corruption and negligence. A clock and e-bike manufacturing company was given the tender of renovation. Oppositions questioned BJP’s step of not filing proper FIR and arrests.
