EC allots ‘Dhal Talwar’ for Shinde & ‘Mashaal’ for Uddhav before by-election in Andheri East

The Election Commission has ended high voltage political drama between CM Shinde and Thackeray group for owning the identity of real Shiv Sena. On Tuesday, the poll body has allotted ‘Two Swords & Shield‘ or ‘Dhal Talwar‘ to Eknath Shinde-led faction as symbol, that was given the name ‘Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena‘ a day ago.

On Monday, the EC allotted ‘Shiv SenaUddhav Balasaheb Thackeray‘ as the party name for the Thackeray faction while it was given ‘Flaming Torch‘ or ‘Mashaal‘ as the election symbol.

Last week the Election Commission had frozen the ‘Bow & Arrow‘ symbol for an interim period for both Shinde and Uddhav-led faction. It also asked the two sides not to use the name ‘Shiv Sena‘. The Commission asked both the groups to come up with new name and symbol for elections which will be allotted once finalised. This step of EC vanished the conflict between the two factions for owning the name and symbol of Balasaheb’s Shiv Sena after their division in June.

However, these new party symbols aren’t new to Shiv Sena. These symbols were already used by Balasaheb Thackeray to contest elections in past. During the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election in 1968, the Sena contested with the Shield and Swords symbol. The ‘Mashaal’ symbol was used by Shiv Sena between 1984-1990 while contesting elections with the BJP which also gave the Shiv Sena its first MLA in 1990 – Chhagan Bhujbal, who won from the Mazgaon constituency with the Flaming Torch symbol.
