Champhai, Mizoram, was struck by an earthquake with a Richter scale value of 3.6. The north eastern states have been hit by two earthquakes in the last week. The Champhai area of Mizoram was struck by an earthquake at 7:15 p.m. today, according to the National Center for Seismology.
The earthquake occurred at a time when the area had been severely hit by excessive rain during the monsoon. The area is located on the mountainous terrains of the new fold Himalayan mountain range. This is the second landslide to hit Champai in Mizoram in the past two days. There have been no reports of injuries or fatalities related to this landslide to date.
The Union environment ministry announced on Tuesday that Mizoram has been added to the list of Indian locations to be recognised as wetlands of international significance under the Ramsar Convention. On its 75th anniversary of independence, India intends to get 75 of its wetlands designated as Ramsar sites, according to officials. Given that India has been working to contribute to the world’s biological diversity, this issue is of utmost importance.
