Neeraj Chopra, a gold medalist in the javelin throw in the Tokyo Olympics, will not compete in the Birmingham-hosted 2022 Commonwealth Games. According to reports, Neeraj will not compete in the quadrennial competition due to a thigh injury he suffered at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.
“Neeraj Chopra is not well because he was hurt during the World Athletics Championships final. He let us know about it.” The IOA Secretary General, Rajeev Mehta, confirmed that India’s star athlete would not be competing in the CWG in 2022.
The javelin throw competition at the Commonwealth Games 2018 was currently being won by Neeraj Chopra. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, he had taken home the gold.
The news came just days before the CWG 2022 and after Neeraj won silver in the men’s javelin throw competition at the Eugene, Oregon, World Athletics Championship 2022.
The Indian javelin thrower won a silver at the World Athletics Championships by throwing 88.13 metres on his fourth try, making him the only other Indian athlete to do so. After he made his fourth throw, which won him the gold medal, Chopra admitted he felt some discomfort in his thigh.
