In many villages in Odisha’s Rayagada district, polluted water from open sources has caused at least six deaths and 71 hospitalizations due to diarrhoea, according to officials on Saturday.
The event sparked uproar in the legislature, and the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s reply was demanded by the Opposition Congress.
Over the last three days, fatalities have been recorded in a number of villages in the Kashipur block. 11 physicians visited the afflicted communities, collected blood and water samples, and then sent them off for analysis. According to authorities, the water-borne illness was originally discovered in Maliguda village and afterward spread to Dudukabahal, Tikiri, Gobrighati, Routghati, and Jalakhura villages.
According to reports, there are several additional people suffering from diarrhoea in the villages of Dangasil, Renga, Hadiguda, Maikanch, Sankarada, and Kuchipadar who are receiving home medical care. Of the 71 patients who were admitted to the hospital after consuming water from public sources, 11 girls from an ashram school are being treated in Thatibar Public Health Center (PHC), 14 are receiving care at Kashipur Community Health Center, and 46 are being treated at Tikiri Public Health Center (PHC).
According to the CDMO, water from an open well in Maliguda, where the sickness was initially discovered, was determined to be polluted. As a result, the authorities in charge have been urged to set up alternative water sources for the communities. As per the official, water sources in neighbouring communities will also be located and cleaned. Water-borne illnesses have a history in Kashipur Block. Diarrhea caused over 100 deaths in 2008, and cholera also took about 100 lives in 2010.
