Achinta Sheuli, a weightlifter from India, won gold in the men’s 73 kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2022 with a confident performance. Sheuli, 20, set a new games record by lifting 313 kg in total at the NEC Hall 1 in Birmingham.
He won the competition by snatching 143 kilogrammes and clean and jerks 170 kilogrammes, beating out Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad for second place with a total of 303 kilogrammes and S. Darsigny of Canada for third place with a total of 298 kilogrammes.
The gold medal won by Sheuli is India’s third at these 2022 Commonwealth Games and its sixth overall, all in weightlifting.
The Indian athlete’s total of 313kg, a Commonwealth Games record, was reached after he successfully lifted 170kg on his third attempt after failing to do so on his first two attempts.
Achinta, a 20-year-old former tailor from the West Bengali area of Howrah, began weightlifting in 2011 after idolising his brother, who had previously competed in the sport. Later, in 2015, he joined Army Sports Institute and kept up his outstanding performance in the sport. He joined the Indian National Camp in the same year, 2015. He trained at ASI once again in 2016 and 2017, and since 2018, he has been in the National camp.
Achinta’s mother Purnima Sheuli always encouraged him to pursue his love for weightlifting and represent the nation on the international arena despite the fact that he lost his father when he was a very small boy.
