The BJP’s Wes Bengal unit warned Mamata Banerjee’s government on Thursday that unless she cuts fuel tariffs in the next 15 days, the party will stage large rallies across the state. The BJP has vowed to go on strike if the West Bengal government does not slash fuel tariffs within the next 15 days, according to sources.
Sukanta Majumdar, the state president of the BJP, told reporters that once the Centre has cleared all GST dues, the state government should provide some assistance to the people. “The Centre has received West Bengal’s GST dues.” Fuel prices should now be reduced as a result. He told PTI that the price of petrol should be reduced by at least Rs 5, and the price of diesel by Rs 10.
“The Centre has twice slashed petrol costs, but the state administration has not lowered taxes even once,” he remarked, criticising the Mamata regime. The BJP would wait 15 days before taking to the streets if the state does not take action, according to Majumdar.
“If they don’t lower the petrol prices, we’re going to take to the streets.” He added, “We will also march to the state secretariat Nabanna to fight for people’s rights.” According to the Finance Ministry, the Centre has cleared the entire GST compensation due up to May 31 by distributing Rs 86,912 crore to the states.
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) was implemented on July 1, 2017, and states were guaranteed reimbursement for any revenue lost as a result of the introduction of GST for a five-year term.
TMC general secretary Kunal Ghosh stated that once the Centre clears all outstanding debts, the state government will lower fuel charges. “The state government has already stated that if the Centre settles its debts totaling Rs 97,000 crores, it will lower petrol charges. The state would not levy oil taxes for the next five years until the dues are paid “Ghosh explained.
