Devendra Fadnavis, the leader of the (BJP), declared Eknath Shinde, the rebel leader of the Shiv Sena, as the new chief minister of Maharashtra on Thursday. Fadnavis shocked everyone by upsetting expectations that he would retain the Shinde faction’s backing and become the next chief minister. After meeting with Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari alongside Shinde, Fadnavis said at a press conference held on the grounds of Raj Bhavan that Shinde alone will take the oath of office at 7.30 pm and that cabinet enlargement will take place later.
Shinde told the journalists, “I won’t betray the faith Fadnavis has placed in me.” Former chief minister and current head of the opposition in the Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis, promised that the BJP will provide its support to Shinde’s group. The BJP is the only party with a majority in parliament.
Fadnavis has stated that he will not participate in the government, but he will see that it runs well.
Wednesday night, Uddhav Thackeray resigned as chief minister of Maharashtra due to a mutiny within his own Shiv Sena party and the realisation that he would not be able to demonstrate his government’s majority in the House. His resignation came after the Supreme Court declined to impose a stay on a floor test that the Governor had ordered for Thursday.
