Chinese company BYD overtakes Tesla in global sales list for EVs

BYD a Chinese EV brand overtook Tesla as the best-selling EVs in the world in the first half of 2022. The company’s growth grew by 300 percent as compared to the same period last year. The sales figures of both these brands show that Tesla is well behind BYD.

Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD sold 641,000 new energy vehicles in the first half of 2022, a 315% year-on-year increase, according to a report released by the company. BYD continues to maintain its leading position in the domestic EV market and has overtaken Tesla to become a leading sales EV company.

Tesla’s production and delivery report for the second quarter of 2022 shows the US EV maker delivered 564,000 vehicles worldwide in the first half of this year, a 46% increase from 386,200 vehicles in the first half of 2021.

BYD previously disclosed in an investor conference call that its sales target for new energy vehicles in 2022 could be between 1.1 million to 1.2 million, including 600,000 pure electric vehicles and 500,000 to 600,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles. The latest report shows BYD’s sales targets have more than halved, indicating it will strive for higher sales based on improving supply chains.
