China bans tattoos for minors, saying it is against ‘socialist values’

China’s State Council passed new rules on Monday prohibiting enterprises, groups, or individuals from providing tattooing services to minors, as well as coercing, fomenting, or encouraging them to get inked.

According to the laws authorized by China’s State Council’s minors protection department, tattoo shops should make explicit declarations in their shops that they do not provide services to children and ask for identification to verify the customers’ age if it is not obvious.

According to the new law, no commercial, books, journals, or digital media may contain information that could encourage minors to acquire tattoos. Parents and guardians must also discourage their children from getting tattoos. The new regulation must be supported by government agencies such as the health, market monitoring, public security, judiciary, and civil affairs ministries.
