According to information, in order to reach the lunar surface, the Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft, a component of India’s ambitious third Moon mission, successfully executed its penultimate orbital maneuver on Wednesday.
This accomplishment brings the spacecraft even closer to its planned destination. Further, after finishing its maneuvers to reach the moon, the spacecraft, as per the reports from ISRO, is now ready to start the next phase, which involves the detachment of the propulsion module and the lander module.
The lander module comprises of rover Pragyan and the lander Vikram. Chandrayaan-3 was successfully put into the desired orbit of 153 km by 163 km thanks to today’s successful firing, which was necessary for a short while. With this, the lunar maneuvers are completed. Further, the national agency have stated that, preparations are needed because the Propulsion Module and Lander Module are preparing for their own missions.
It was planned to detach the lander module from the spacecraft’s propulsion module on August 17. Chandrayaan-3 was launched on July 14 and arrived in lunar orbit on August 5. Then, on August 6, 9, and 14, three orbit reduction procedures were carried out to bring the spacecraft closer to the Moon.
As the project moves forward, ISRO gradually lowers Chandrayaan-3‘s orbit to align it with the lunar poles. The spacecraft is slated to soft land in the southern polar region of the Moon on August 23.
