Brittney Griner: Emerging Basketball Star Jailed For Nine Years in Drug Charges

Russian court has sentenced the Unites States Women’s basketball star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison on drug charges.

She was also been said to pay a fine of one million roubles ( $16,300 dollars). Griner proved guilty to drug charges but has denied deliberately breaking the law.

This 31-year-old Women’s Olympic gold medalist was detained in the month of February at the airport near Moscow when the security officials found some vape cartridges containing the cannabis oil in her luggage.

Brittney Griner’s defence team said that they would appeal against the Thursday’s verdict by the court in Khimki, near Moscow. United States President Joe Biden conveyed in a statement that Russia was wrongfully detaining Brittney Griner and called for her to be released immediately.
