Avinash Sable of India finished a creditable fifth at the prestigious Diamond League Meet today, shattering his own national record in the 3000m steeplechase for the eighth time.
The 27-year-old army soldier from a poor family in Maharashtra’s Beed district raced 8:12.48 in a high-quality field late Sunday night, breaking his own national record of 8:16.21 set at the Indian Grand Prix in Thiruvananthapuram in March by more over three seconds.
Soufiane El Bakkali, a local icon and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, won the event in a meeting record and world-leading time of 7:58.28.
Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia finished second in a personal best of 7:59.24, while Hailemariyam Tegegn of Ethiopia finished third in a career best of 8:06.29.
2016 Rio Olympics champion Conseslus Kipruto of Kenya was fourth in 8:12.47, a one-hundreth of the second ahead of Sable.
Sable, however, finished ahead of Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Benjamin Kigen of Kenya who ended at eighth with 8:17.32
