At Least 170 Held Following Raids As PFI Crackdown Continues

In the early hours of Tuesday, new raids in seven states led to the arrest of about 170 members of the Popular Front of India (PFI). According to sources, state police are conducting searches across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Assam, Karnataka, Delhi, and Maharashtra as a result of information obtained by central agencies that PFI is “planning violent protests” against the prior extensive search by NIA, ED, and police.

Up to 45 PFI members were detained in Karnataka while in “preventive custody.” They will be brought before the tehsildar in the area, where they will ask for judicial detention and be imprisoned. These PFI members had either disrupted local peace previously or had stopped NIA employees and protested.

Since late Monday night, PFI-related raids have been taking place in numerous parts of Delhi, including Shaheen Bagh and Jamia. During the raids, some 12 persons have been taken into custody. Teams from the Delhi Police Special Cell and neighbourhood police stations participated in the raids in addition to the investigating agencies. Up to four North-East Delhi residents have been arrested.

As a result of ongoing information and evidence that they were involved in funding terrorism and terrorist activities, organising camps to provide arms training, and radicalising people to join prohibited organisations, the NIA registered five cases in relation to the top PFI leaders’ homes and offices.
